Druk Path Trek

The most popular trekking route in Bhutan, the six-day Druk Path Trek passes across stunning landscapes, through blue pine forests, over high ridges, and past pristine lakes. Along the path, we can visit ancient temples, dzongs, and villages.

With the trail winding between 2,400 and 4,200 m, Druk Path Trek is easier than others. The trek offers striking views of Mt. Gangkar Puensum, the highest unclimbed mountain in the world. The best time for Druk Path Trek is between March and June or September and November.

Day 1
Paro to Jili Dzong
Time: 4-5 hrs
Distance 7 km
Trial: 1,090 m ascent
Campsite altitude: 3,480 m
The trail starts from Ta Dzong, the National Museum of Bhutan, in Paro. The first day can be arduous as we climb more than 1,000 m.

Day 2
Jili Dzong to Jangchulakha
Time: 4-5 hrs
Distance 10 km
Trail: 310 m ascent, 50 m descent
Campsite altitude: 3,770 m
The trail begins with an hour and half of sharp climb. The rest of the trail is gentle.

Day 3
Jangchulakha to Jimgelang Lake
Time: 4 hrs
Distance 11 km
Trail: 230 m descent, 330 m ascent
Campsite altitude: 3,870 m
The trail is across a ridge. The view of mountains and valleys on a clear day can be mesmerizing. The campsite is by Jimgelang Lake known for its gigantic trout.

Day 4
Jimgelang Tsho to Simkotra Lake
Time: 4 hrs
Distance: 11 km
Trail: 820 m ascent, 400 m descent
Campsite altitude: 4,110 m
The trail winds amidst dwarf rhododendron trees and past Janetsho Lake. We may come across some yak herders’ camps along the way.

Day 5
Simkotra Lake to Phajoding
Time: 3-4 hrs
Distance 10 km
Trail: 130 m ascent, 680 m descent
Campsite altitude: 3,750 m
The trail starts with a gradual climb. On a clear day, we can enjoy the spectacular view of Mt. Gangkar Puensum and several mountain peaks.

Day 6
Phajoding to Motithang
Time: 3 hrs
Distance 4-5 km
Trail: 1,130 m descent
After walking past Phajoding Monastery, the trail descends into Thimphu valley through blue pine forests. At a leisurely pace, it takes three hours.

Druk Path Ends
Druk Path ends at the Bhutan Broadcast Service Tower at Sangay Gang with a refreshing view of the Thimphu city.
